Longterm review – Peltor LEP-200 – In ear earplugs for hunting – Three years later.

Peltor LEP-200 – Lightweight and Effective Earplugs for Hunting

I have always been careful about my hearing and use hearing protection while hunting and shooting. Since I started hunting, I have been using Peltor’s products because they are affordable and, most importantly, robust. My old earmuffs could withstand being run over by a tank without any damage, as long as I was careful to change the hygiene kit regularly; they lasted forever.

Lightweight and comfortable – The Peltor Lep-200

Active ear muffs usually do what is expected of them, protecting your hearing during sudden loud noises. However, there are disadvantages to ear muffs: if you wear a hat, you lose a lot of noise reduction as the muffs must be tight-fitting to dampen optimally. It becomes sweaty and humid inside the muffs with prolonged use, and directionality is not the best.

I have long been interested in Peltor’s active earplugs. When Peltor LEP-100 was released, it felt groundbreaking but with one significant drawback – you could not connect them to the hunting radio. When the upgrade Peltor LEP-200 came out with connection possibilities, there was not much to think about. I had to try a pair.

Excellent noise reduction for the Peltor Lep 200

I have actively tested these earplugs for more than three years with in total almost 300 hunting days, both with and without the radio connected. Several shots with both shotgun and rifle have been fired using these earplugs as hearing protection. The first thing that struck me was how lightweight they were. I was afraid of losing them at first, but I felt a little more secure thanks to the string that comes with the package that you use to connect the plugs. Of course, it is a little more challenging to insert these plugs than to put on a pair of earmuffs, but once they are in place, they sit like a rock. It takes a lot to make them fall out of your ears, and the best part is that you eventually forget that you are wearing hearing protection. Handling is easy as there is only one button on the plugs.

There are three different volume levels: low, medium, high, and completely muted sound. I usually have mine on medium volume as it feels like I am without hearing protection.

Directionality is much better and easier, thanks to the two separate units that work independently of each other. The only thing that can disturb is if it is very windy, then there is noise in the shields. You can put small wind protection on the plugs, and the noise will be significantly reduced.

Easy connectivity to a radio by the 3M Peltor LEP 200

Thanks to Peltor’s neck loop, you can easily connect the hunting radio to the earplugs wirelessly. It is a simple and perhaps outdated technology. Most likely, this technology is used because Bluetooth would drain too much battery on the small plugs. However, you are connected to the hunting radio with one button press. The sound from the hunting radio can be a bit bulky and noisy. I have found that it depends on the coverage of the hunting radio. It becomes more sensitive to poor coverage compared to a wired headset that is directly connected to the hunting radio. It is nothing that disturbs the overall experience, but be prepared that the sound may not be as good as you are used to.

There are different plugs included in the package. It is worth mentioning that the plugs reduce noise differently. You can read the exact reduction values at the bottom of the page. The plugs that provide the best reduction are the Torque plugs. If you have these on, there are few hearing protectors that can reduce better. They are like a pair of regular passive earplugs, and the reduction is phenomenal. The shots I have fired are barely noticeable; the perceived

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Lightweight design and included cord provide added security and make it easy to wear the earplugs for extended periods of time
  • Three volume settings allow for customization to suit your needs
  • Directional detection is improved compared to some other ear protection options
  • Comes with different earplug options to fit various ear shapes and sizes
  • Includes wireless connectivity to a hunting radio with a simple button press
  • Torque earplugs provide phenomenal noise reduction and are great for loud shooting environments

Cons:

  • Wind noise can be a problem, but the included windshields can mitigate this to some extent
  • Connectivity to hunting radios may result in bulkier, less clear audio compared to a wired option
  • Some earplugs may not dampen sound as effectively as others, so it’s important to choose the right option for your needs

In summary, the Peltor LEP-200 earplugs are a great option for hunters and shooters who prioritize hearing protection but don’t want to sacrifice comfort or convenience. With multiple volume settings, directional detection, and wireless connectivity, these earplugs offer a range of features that make them a top choice for many outdoors enthusiasts. However, they may not be the best choice for those who are sensitive to wind noise or who require the clearest possible audio from their hunting radio.
